Special Issue Information
Cadmium is a toxic heavy metal for humans. Apart of industrial workers, the most common exposure to cadmium is cigarette smoking. Smoking exposes human lungs to cadmium where it begins to increase reactive oxygen species and cause inflammation. Due to its long half-life and extremely poor endocrine clearance, cadmium toxicity is essentially permanent. Common heavy metal therapies like chelators are ineffective at reducing cadmium toxicity. Moreover, cadmium hijacks proteins allow zinc to enter the cell. Thus, Zinc’s role in the immune system is greatly reduced as a result, and cadmium is able to prolong its toxic effects. Cadmium’s toxicity mechanism needs to be better understood so that effective therapeutic targets can be elucidated. Currently, the most prevalent evidence for a mechanism is programmed cell death (PCD). Multi-arm cell death complex is an emerging concept in PCD that is the simultaneous activation of well-known PCD pathways (pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis). Cadmium is known to activate PCD regulators, but the precise mechanism of this is still unknown. Lung cancer, osteoarthritis, COPD, neural inflammation, and other diseases continue to persist in patients that have a history of cigarette smoking.
